My name is Abby Williams. I study Communication and Journalism at Griffith University on the Gold Coast, Australia.
Through studying and attending lectures I’m building a map of the journalism industry, and although I am eager to experience as much of it as I can to feel what’s right, a small part of me already knows.
I dream of working in print. I believe in the power of the written word and the resilience of newspapers. Plus, I just really, really like to write.
When I’m not working through university assignments, I’m writing articles for my local newspaper. I’m trying to perfect the art of interviewing.
Something you should know about me is that I spent two years volunteering with a humanitarian organisation, gathering thousands of stories from across 36 countries in a stack of beat-up journals.
Those are the stories dearest to me because they capture countless conversations and moments shared with people who have stories of their own.
Having been on the receiving end of such extraordinary stories helped me to realise that each one matters in one way or another, and that is something I want to keep in mind no matter where this journalism degree takes me.
But for the moment, I’m doing my best to understand and care for the world around me. I’m doing my best to write what is true, stay on top of my studies, and simply enjoy the adventure that is life.
